Economic & Financial Analysis: Current Trends & Issues with Mr. Bruce Hennis
(The following article is based on the Rethink Network – Part 4 of a 4-Part Series)
Keeping up with Marketplace Changes and News
Bruce noted that he keeps updates of recent market data, corporate financial data (including Annual Reports), economic data using Bureau of Economic Analysis, Federal Reserve Bank, Bank of England data etc., but scanning the news becomes useful in order to see if there is anything that he is missing. He advised that the key thing is to dive deep into the numbers for yourself, and start to create a picture in your own mind of what is going on.
Most Important Issues/Trends Currently Seen in Financial Markets
As it is, right now we are literally in a time like no other in our own lifetime. There are a multiplicity of events simultaneously hitting us. It is important to note that in the 2008 Financial Crisis, it was mortgages (that is, homeowners) and financial institutions that collapsed, including two of the largest bankruptcies in US History. As a result of this, several nations of the world were affected and many have not yet fully recovered.
However, we are now faced with:
- Growing global conflicts, with countries that make up 2/3 of the world’s total economic size, facing serious warfare;
- Shifts in world economic power, with a decrease in the size of the economic gap between the United States and China;
- A significant increase in borrowing by nations, which may become a growing bubble;
- A United States debt divided by its gross domestic product (Debt to GDP) ratio reaching its 3rd and 4th highest levels since 1790;
- An Inflation Dragon that has resulted in a significant increase in the cost of living for some of the world’s largest economies, especially with crude oil and wheat prices having reached levels last seen in 2008;
- Very rapid increases in Interest rate increases to curb inflation;
- A slowing world economy, with global growth having slowed since 2008;
- Significant stock market plunges: in 2020 and 2022;
BUT:
For the 7 PILLARS companies (mentioned in Part 1 of the series), growth in their Average Revenues from 2019 to 2021 increased by a factor of x 1.2. When compared with the Fortune 500 companies as a collective group, the Average Revenues of that group of 500 companies from 2019 to 2021, grew by a factor of x 1.1 .
For the 7 PILLARS companies, growth in their Average Profits from 2019 to 2021 was by a factor of x 1.75. For the Fortune 500 companies on the other hand, growth in their Average Profits from 2019 to 2021 was by a factor of x 1.0.
The 7 PILLARS companies experienced growth in their value from January 2020 through to June 2022 of 46%. In comparison, the Standard & Poor’s (S&P) 500 stock market index grew in value, from January 2020 to June 2022 by 20%.
